Yellowman was commissioned by and premiered at McCarter Theatre in a co-production with The Wilma Theater and Long Wharf Theatre. Orlandersmith was a Pulitzer Prize finalist and Drama Desk Award nominee for Outstanding Play and Outstanding Actress in a Play for Yellowman in 2002.

Content disclosure: This play centers on topics of colorism, parental abuse, and alcoholism. Sizeism / fatphobia, profanity, sexually suggestive language / descriptions of sexual intercourse, and racial slurs (N word / N slur) are heavily present in the language of the play. The play also includes a description of patricide, killing an animal, incarceration of a Black man, and miscarriage.
