The Colored Museum by George C. Wolfe-July 15, 2016

THE COLORED MUSEUM depicts 11 “exhibits” of African-American culture from the depths of the celebrity slave ship to the spinning heights of Harlem.  George C. Wolfe’s groundbreaking drama is hilarious and discomforting, skewering stereotypes and exploring what it means to be black in contemporary America. Many say the play was the precursor to the popular 90s show In Living Color.  Audience members  will be led  through a tour of the “exhibits” by a tour guide and in between each tour they will be able to enjoy live music and poetry by Kalamazoo’s own Truth Tone Records, as well as, wine and hors d’ oeuvres.

Journey to 1967, in the city of Detroit. Motown music is getting the party started, and Chelle and her brother Lank are making ends meet by turning their basement into an after-hours joint. But when a mysterious woman finds her way into their lives, the siblings clash over much more than the family business. As their pent up feelings erupt, so does their city, and they find themselves caught in the middle of the '67 riots.
