SYNOPSIS: Discover the power of family, hope, and something better always on the horizon.
Set against the social politics of the 1950s, this charming, funny, and moving play follows 17-year-old Ernestine Crump as she adjusts to life after the passing of her beloved mother. The Crump family is adrift and in trouble. In search of spiritual answers, Ernestine’s father relocates the family from Pensacola to Brooklyn where Widowed Godfrey falls under the spell of Sweet Father Divine, while his teen daughters immerse themselves in theillusions of Hollywood to escape racial prejudice. It is here the Crumps must navigate a changing family dynamic, an unwelcoming neighborhood, and a shifting set of American ideals.
CHARACTER BREAKDOWN: GODFREY CRUMP, to play 30-40's, Black Man: Godfrey is "thirty-five years old" and a widower. His wife, Sandra, passed away. Godfrey, riddled with grief, seeking change, and direction from Father Divine (Peace Mission Movement) relocates himself and his 2 daughters from Florida to New York City. He is a country man, devout in his spiritual beliefs, and a trying father.
ERNESTINE CRUMP, to play 17 years old, Black Woman: Godfrey’s older daughter. She doubles as the narrator of the play. She is seventeen, and as the play begins she is preparing to graduate from high school. She is smart, thoughtful, obedient yet curious, observant, and learning to forge her own path.
ERMINA CRUMP, to play 15 years old, Black Woman: Godfrey’s youngest daughter, and Ernestine's younger sister. Both opinionated and vocal, Ermina respects her roots while also having a strong and vocal disdain of her father's household rules and ideologies based in "The Divine." She learns to adapt to the world of Brooklyn, NY.
LILY "Sister" ANN GREEN, to play 35 years old, Black Woman: Sister of the deceased, Sandra, (who was the mother of Ernestine and Ermina, and wife to Godfrey). She moved from Harlem at a young age to escape the southern Christian mindset enduring the Jim Crow era. Lily has an energy that could take up the room. She is a free-thinker and proud communist of her time, educated, a little lost. GERTE SHULTE, to play 30's, German/white: Gerte is a German immigrant who traveled to NY in search of music and refuge. In a turn of events, she becomes Godfrey's wife. She is honest, steadfast, open-hearted, and strong-willed.
